Sample Test Directions

This test consists of three sections: 1) a listening section in which you will listen to a recording and answer multiple-choice questions, 2) a reading section with multiple-choice questions, and 3) a written assignment section. The directions for each section appear before that section.

Each question in the first two sections of this test is a multiple-choice question with four answer choices. Read each question carefully and choose the ONE best answer. Try to answer all questions. In general, if you have some knowledge about a question, it is better to try to answer it. You will NOT be penalized for guessing.

The third section of this test consists of two written assignments. You will be asked to provide written responses for assigned topics.

Sample Directions for Listening Comprehension

This section of this test contains multiple-choice questions that involve listening to a recording. Each listening passage will be played twice.

The first recording will begin automatically once you advance to the next screen. There will be 20 seconds of silence at the beginning of each listening passage. During the 20 seconds, you should familiarize yourself with the test question(s).

Once the audio begins, you will not be able to pause, stop, or replay it. Therefore, listen carefully, and then answer the question(s) on the screen. Even if you are unsure of an answer, it is better to guess than not to answer a question at all. You will NOT be penalized for guessing.

You will not be able to go back and review your answers to questions in this section of the test. Once you move to the next question, you will not be able to go back to the previous questions in this section. Therefore, be sure to select your answer carefully before you move to the next question. The next listening excerpt will not begin playing until you advance to the next question.

Please be aware that the visual enhancements Example of the Color Scheme visual enhancement control and Example of the Font Size visual enhancement control are NOT available during this section of the test. Please DO NOT use these features until you have completed all listening items and proceeded to the remaining sections of the test.

Subarea 1—LISTENING COMPREHENSION

1. Escuche con cuidado el diálogo que sigue. Escuchará el diálogo dos veces.

female: Disculpe, señor, estoy un poco perdida. ¿Me puede dirigir a la Biblioteca Nacional?

male: Claro, con mucho gusto, señorita. Aquí estamos en la Calle Segunda, y usted necesita seguir en esta calle por cinco cuadras hasta que vea el museo nacional. Después del museo hay una tienda de artesanía a su derecha.
